Description
Role highlights:
Smart Manufacturing, Software
Location: Espoo, Finland
Department: Global Manufacturing Organization
Reports to: Smart Manufacturing Engineer, Team Lead
Employment type: Permanent
Workplace model: Hybrid
Employment is subject to applicable security screening (incl. SUPO, where required)
Why this role matters:
A mid‑level software engineer focused on production test automation. This person will work first on RAVEN (our in-house production test automation and procedure framework project), then expand to broader Smart Manufacturing Engineering (SME) work integrating software with electronic test equipment and stations.
This is a role for someone who’s proficient in Python, Linux, automation frameworks and lab instruments, and who is motivated by keeping real hardware tests reliable for operators on the production floor.
Who We Are
ICEYE delivers space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities to governments and allied nations. This includes sovereign and turnkey ISR missions leveraging ICEYE’s world-leading synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite technology, as well as access to data from the world’s largest SAR satellite constellation. These capabilities enable partners to detect and respond to critical changes anywhere on Earth with unprecedented speed and accuracy – day or night and in any weather, supported by ultra high-resolution imagery and high-frequency revisits.
As a trusted partner for defense, intelligence, security, and maritime domain awareness, ICEYE’s near real-time data creates a tactical advantage for mission-critical operations. Designed for dual use, the platform also serves civil protection and commercial users for natural-catastrophe intelligence, insurance, maritime monitoring (including oil-spill detection), and finance, contributing to global security and community resilience.
ICEYE is headquartered in Finland and operates globally across Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific. We have more than 900 employees, united by a shared vision: improving life on Earth by becoming the global source of truth in Earth Observation.
Requirements
Your day-to-day responsibilities
Initially, the balance is roughly 40% Python/test-automation development, 10% documentation, and 50% production support - shifting toward more proactive development over time.
Develop and review RAVEN procedures and libraries in Python/Robot Framework.
Investigate intermittent test failures using logs, measurements and systematic debugging.
Support operators on test stations when something breaks or is unclear.
Improve CI/test pipelines and reporting for production tests.
Write and update documentation so that stations and procedures are easier to use and maintain.
What we’re looking for
Must haves:
Strong Python skills for production-quality code (object-oriented design, packaging/releases, linting/formatting; experience with tools like uv and other tools).
Daily use of git / GitHub in a collaborative environment (branching, merging, code reviews, pull requests).
Solid test automation fundamentals: designing and structuring test suites, investigating instability, debugging failures, and reporting results.
Proven troubleshooting skills across software, instruments and environments: log analysis, systematic narrowing of scope, reproducing issues.
Comfortable using Linux as a primary development environment (shell, tools, environments).
Hands-on experience with hardware-in-the-loop or similar tests that interact with real hardware.
Familiarity with lab instrument automation (SCPI/VISA/TCP/USB) and hands-on use of typical lab equipment (oscilloscopes, PSUs, DMMs, electronic loads, etc.).
Understanding of how production or manufacturing test automation works (repeatability, traceability, integration with systems beyond a single bench).
4–7 years of experience in software engineering, test automation, or similar roles involving Python and hardware-related testing.
Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Automation, Electronics, or a closely related field (or equivalent practical experience).
Experience working in environments where tests are run on physical hardware (e.g. manufacturing test, hardware-in-the-loop, lab setups).
Nice to haves:
Experience with Robot Framework for developing and maintaining test procedures and libraries.
Experience designing operator-in-the-loop tests (checkpoints, handoff between automation and humans).
Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines (running automated tests on push/PR, managing artifacts).
Experience with documentation practices for SDLC (READMEs, changelogs, test plans, design/review records).
Background in domains such as space/satellite, aerospace, robotics, automation or electronics test/validation.
